We’ve been fortunate enough lately to have stumbled on several awesome sales on ham – I’m talking as low at .88 per pound! When meat is that cheap you toss it in the shopping cart and find uses for it later.

We’ve also been working to change our eating habits and are counting and recording Weight Watcher points. We don’t eat a lot of sandwiches but we learned that Sara Lee makes a low-calorie bread that is only 1 point per slice. Since we can have a sandwich with real bread for just 1 or 2 points, we’re enjoying them again (instead of feeling like we can never have one).

Ham Spread with Garlic and Dill

Ingredients

  • 3 cups ham finely chopped
  • 1/2 medium onion chopped
  • 3 large celery stalks diced
  • 1/2 large can of black olives sliced
  • 1/2 - 1 cup Miracle Whip salad dressing
  • 1/2 cup Garlic Mustard with Dill store bought
  • garlic powder to taste
  • celery salt to taste
  • pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients together and chill in refrigerator. This makes a great spread for sandwiches but can also be served over a lettuce bed to make a salad.

I’ve never been a big fan of mustard – I was raised on Miracle Whip and thought that was what every civilized person put on their sandwich. But we discovered the best tasting mustard ever when we were shopping at Walmart one day. This Dill Mustard is so delicious that I literally use it as a salad dressing and have put it in tuna salad and deviled eggs. In fact, I’m so afraid they’ll quit making it that I’ve got about six bottles in my pantry right now. I love it that much!

We’ve always had to be frugal and stretch our grocery dollars as far as possible. A great way to do that is to get several meals out of your meat purchase. Sandwich spreads help us enjoy the final bits of meat that might be too small to enjoy as a main entree on their own. But served as a part of a sandwich or a salad they’re just right.
